What are Student Learning Objectives [SLOs]?

The primary purpose of SLOs is to improve student learning at the classroom level as well as provide evidence of each teacher's instructional impact on student learning. Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are content-specific, grade level objectives that are measurabeable and focused on growth in student learning and aligned to curriculum standards. All DeKalb courses that must administer SLOs can be located on the SLO Courses page.

What are the Essential Components of SLOs?

Student Learning Objectives require teachers and administrators to pay close attention to the annual academic progress made by students in non-tested subjects. Growth targets within SLOs are determined and are the foundation of the SLO process.

SLOs are aligned to curriculum standards and should be rigorous, measureable, and should deepen and extend knowledge for all students in the class/group/course. Each SLO must specify tbe exact course, subject, grade level, and set of standards for which it was designed.

What should the PRE SLO assessment tell a teacher?

Pre SLOs are given at the start of a course, whether it be yearlong, semester long or a 9-week term in a non-tested course. This Pre score provides a "baseline" for teachers as they begin their instructional process for that course. The strengths and weaknesses are identified and provide teachers with valuable information that will assist with planning and diversifying instruction for all students based on their knowledge and skill base at the beginning of the instructional term.

The ultimate goal of a SLO is to show "growth" for all students which is directly tied to the Teacher Effectiveness Measure (TEM score) and ultimately affects the Leader Effectiveness Measure (LEM score) for Principals.
